Proverbs 18:21- “Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
And those who love it will eat its fruit.”
(MSG)- “Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose.”
(TPT)- “Your words are so powerful that they will kill or give life, and the talkative person will reap the consequences.”
Can we agree, your words are powerful!
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN WOUNDED BY SOMEONE’S WORDS?
HAVE YOU EVER WOUNDED SOMEONE WITH YOUR WORDS
Proverbs 12:18- “Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing.”
(TPT)- “Reckless words are like the thrusts of a sword, cutting remarks meant to stab and to hurt. But the words of the wise soothe and heal.”
James 3:8- “but the tongue is not able to be tamed. It’s a fickle, unrestrained evil that spews out words full of toxic poison!”
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN WOUNDED BY THE TOXIC POISON COMING OUT OF SOMEONE’S MOUTH?
James 3:9-10 “Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right!”
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN WOUNDED BY THE “CURSES” OF ANOTHER?
AND USUALLY IT’S SOMEONE CLOSE TO US!
1 Samuel 20:30- “Saul boiled with rage at Jonathan. “You stupid son of a whore!” he swore at him. “Do you think I don’t know that you want him to be king in your place, shaming yourself and your mother?”
WOUNDED PEOPLE WOUND OTHERS! FOR JOHNATHAN IT WAS A FATHER WOUND!
Hateful words! Demeaning words! Words spoken in anger! Words of rejection! Words that communicate you’re not good enough! You’re less than! Words that try and label you. You’re a failure, you’ll never be successful! You’re a pervert! You’re useless! You’re stupid! You’ll never amount to anything!
WHEN SATAN WANTS TO COME AGAINST YOU
Revelation 12:10- “Then I heard a loud voice shouting across the heavens, “It has come at last— salvation and power and the Kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters has been thrown down to earth—the one who accuses them before our God day and night.”
Revelations 12:15-18- “Then the dragon tried to drown the woman with a flood of water that flowed from his mouth. But the earth helped her by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that gushed out from the mouth of the dragon. And the dragon was angry at the woman and declared war against the rest of her children—all who keep God’s commandments and maintain their testimony for Jesus. Then the dragon took his stand on the shore beside the sea.”
Satan comes against me and you with a flood of words! Words that wound!
Satan wants to beat you down with words!
Let me add. DON’T BE HIS MOUTHPIECE!
HOW DO YOU OVERCOME THE WOUND OF WORDS
- Take Your Stand
Ephesians 6:13-17- “Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
Take your stand! Stand against the one who is trying to take a stand against you! YOU STAND!
When you stand with the armor of God, Satan can’t stand against you!
James 4:7- “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”
resist- (Greek) Antistékomai- withstand, stand, oppose
The verb resist comes from the Latin word resistere, meaning “to take a stand,” or “withstand.”
If you want to overcome the wound of words you must “TAKE YOUR STAND.”
2. Work the Word of God
“and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
YOUR BIBLE IS A WEAPON!
Meditate on the Word of God! Declare the Word of God!
How did Jesus defeat the words of temptation coming from Satan?
Matthew 4:4- “But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say,‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
Hebrews 4:12- “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.”
Psalms 1:2-3- “But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night.
They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.”
Overcome the Wound of Words. Take your Stand and Work the Word of God!
3. Forgive Those Who Have Wounded You With Words
2 Corinthians 2:10-11- “Now whom you forgive anything, I also forgive. For if indeed I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven that one for your sakes in the presence of Christ, lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.”
(MSG)- “After all, we don’t want to unwittingly give Satan an opening for yet more mischief—we’re not oblivious to his sly ways!”
Have you been wounded with words? Don’t wait on them to ask for forgiveness. We leave the door open to the enemy.
CONCLUSION: What is the Holy Spirit saying to you today?
