INTRODUCTION: Set the stage from Luke 22. Jesus sharing the Passover meal with his disciples. Men he had been with for 3 years.
They don’t fully understand what’s going on this Passover. They’re just sitting down to share the Passover meal as all good Jews did but what they didn’t realize this time is that the true Passover Lamb, the final Passover Sacrifice, is sharing this meal with them.
BUT JESUS KNOWS! HE’S ON THE WAY TO THE CROSS
BUT THEY DON’T GET IT!
Let’s pick up in the middle of the conversation.
Luke 22:21-25- “But here at this table, sitting among us as a friend, is the man who will betray me. For it has been determined that the Son of Man must die. But what sorrow awaits the one who betrays him.” The disciples began to ask each other which of them would ever do such a thing. Then they began to argue among themselves about who would be the greatest among them.”
Surely they must not have heard him! Because they start talking about who is going to be the greatest!
“Guys it has already been determined that I am about to die!!!”
“Oh, bless your heart,” and they keep talking about who is going to be the greatest”
It’s like me sitting around with the staff of the church and telling them I don’t have long to live.
(EXAMPLE)
But it’s in this setting that Jesus does the unthinkable.
For Jesus, it was the display of His humility and His servanthood.
John 13:4-5- “So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.”
What Jesus was doing was in direct contrast to the attitude of the disciples!
IN THE ROOM WERE TWO DIFFERENT ATTITUDES!
Walking in sandals on the filthy roads of Israel in the first century made it imperative that feet be washed at a meal!
Jesus was doing the work of the lowliest of servants.
The disciples must have been stunned at this act of humility and condescension, that Christ, their Lord and master, should wash the feet of His disciples, when it was their proper work to have washed His.
BUT IN THE ROOM WERE TWO DIFFERENT ATTITUDES! WHY?
WHY DID JESUS HAVE A DIFFERENT ATTITUDE OF HEART?
John 13:3- “Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God.”
- Jesus Knew The Father
John 14:8-9- “Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.”
Jesus replied, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show him to you?
JESUS HAD A DIFFERENT ATTITUDE BECAUSE
2. He Knew Who He Was
“I come form God and all authority has been given to me.”
The disciples still didn’t quite get it. When Jesus went to the cross they were scattered.
JESUS HAD A DIFFERENT ATTITUDE BECAUSE
3. He Knew Where He Was Going
“He came from God and he was returning from to God.”
After Jesus resurrection from the grave and before his ascension to heaven some of the disciples return to fishing. They have no idea what’s going on where they’re going.
THUS TWO DIFFERENT ATTITUDES IN THE ROOM
BUT JESUS WOULD SAY THIS TO HIS DISCIPLES
John 13:14-15- “And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.”
John 13:17- “Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them.”
CONCLUSION: And that’s exactly what happened to this group of disciples. All except one.
Before Jesus leaves the earth He tells his disciples to go and wait in Jerusalem, some say in the same upper room that he shared the passover meal with them, wait until they be filled with a power from God.
A power that would enable them to turn the world upside down for Jesus. For them to GO AND SERVE ONE ANOTHER AND SERVE THE WORLD AS JESUS DID.
HOW COULD THEY DO THIS
- They began to know their Heavenly Father
- They discovered who they were.
- They knew where they were going.
TODAY- You and I can do the same, because of Jesus Christ.
WHO’S IN THE ROOM? IS IT ALL ABOUT YOU OR IS JESUS IN THE ROOM
