1Samuel 30:3-8, 18-19- “When David and his men saw the ruins and realized what had happened to their families, they wept until they could weep no more. David’s two wives, Ahinoam from Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal from Carmel, were among those captured. David was now in great danger because all his men were very bitter about losing their sons and daughters, and they began to talk of stoning him. But David found strength in the Lord his God. Then he said to Abiathar the priest, “Bring me the ephod!” So Abiathar brought it.Then David asked the Lord, “Should I chase after this band of raiders? Will I catch them?” And the Lord told him, “Yes, go after them. You will surely recover everything that was taken from you!”
(Verses 18-19)- “David got back everything the Amalekites had taken, and he rescued his two wives. Nothing was missing: small or great, son or daughter, nor anything else that had been taken. David brought everything back.”
INTRODUCTION: David got knocked down! While he wasn’t looking, behind his back, he got knocked down!
David, a man after God’s own heart, a mighty warrior, a mighty worshipper, but he still got knocked down.
But the good news is that you don’t have to stay down!
Micah 7:8- “Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness the Lord will be my light.”
In 1Samuel 30:16 it says, “….there they were, scattered over the countryside, eating, drinking and reveling because of the great amount of plunder they had taken…”
But what they didn’t know was that David had arose and he was about to get his stuff back.
DAVID WAS “GETTING BACK UP.”
Psalm 30:5 ….”Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning.”
How to get back up?
- Remove the Mask
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING WE DO WHEN WE FALL DOWN?
David and his mighty men wept until they had no more power to weep.
Psalm 34:18- “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.”
2. Remind yourself who you are in Christ
If you don’t remove your mask and remind yourself of your true identity, your pain becomes your identity!
David encouraged himself in the Lord!
If you get knocked down something or someone is going to be speaking to you!
Remind yourself of who you are in Christ!
Romans 8:37- “…in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us.”
“If God is for me who can be against me.” “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.”
3. Reestablish your line of communication with God
I’m not approaching God with doubt, I know who I am!
Don’t get mad at God and don’t make him the last person you talk to.
1Samuel 30:8- “and David inquired of the Lord, Shall I pursue this raiding party? Will I overtake them?”
To many times when we get knocked down we want to take matters into our own hands!
4. Respond with God’s instructions
David responded, not reacted! There’s a lot of people reacting today!
Doing God’s business, God’s way, gets God results!
Many times you can’t resolve today’s issues with yesterday’s instructions.
We need a fresh Word from God!
Exodus 17:6/Numbers 20:7-12
Moses reacted to the attitude of the children of Israel instead of responding with God’s instruction.
“Moses failed to be open to the new avenue through which God intended to move. He acted on the basis of his past experience. The measure of success in the Lord’s eyes is not the outcome of the effort, but the obedience of His servant.”
But when David and his mighty men responded with God’s instructions they recovered all!
This leads to the last step is you’re going to get back up.
5. Resist the temptation to isolate yourself
1 Samuel 30:9-10 – “So David and his 600 men set out, and they came to the brook Besor. But 200 of the men were too exhausted to cross the brook, so David continued the pursuit with 400 men.
David and his men needed each other. The men who stayed at the brook still recovered all that was stolen from them.
We need each other. Too many Christians tend to isolate themselves when they get knocked down.
1Corinthians 12:25,26- “This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other. If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad.”
CONCLUSION: Been knocked down? It’s not getting knocked down we’re focusing on, it’s getting back up!
Remove the Mask
Remind yourself who you are in Christ
Reestablish your line of communication with God
Respond with God Instructions
Resist the Temptation to Isolate Yourself
